EMDR Therapy in Roanoke, VA
Trauma changes the way the brain stores painful memories. Even years later, certain situations can trigger overwhelming emotions, anxiety, panic, or self-doubt.
EMDR Therapy helps your brain process difficult experiences so they no longer carry the same emotional intensity. At All Souls Counseling, I provide EMDR Therapy in Roanoke, VA for adults who are ready to move beyond survival, reduce emotional distress, and create lasting change.
EMDR Therapy
Process Trauma Without Reliving It Over and Over
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that helps your brain reprocess traumatic memories so they no longer hold the same emotional charge. Rather than talking through painful experiences repeatedly, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation — such as guided eye movements — to help your nervous system complete the processing it couldn't finish at the time of the original experience.
EMDR therapy is effective for PTSD, attachment trauma, childhood wounds, relationship injuries, and anxiety rooted in past experiences. Many clients notice meaningful shifts in how they feel about memories that once felt overwhelming — gaining clarity, emotional distance, and a renewed sense of freedom.
EMDR may help if you:
- Experience intrusive memories, flashbacks, or emotional triggers
- Feel stuck despite previous talk therapy
- Carry shame, fear, or self-blame from past relationships or experiences
- Want to heal without having to retell your story in exhaustive detail

What Is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that helps your brain naturally process traumatic memories.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses on helping your brain reorganize painful experiences, so they become less emotionally overwhelming. Many clients report feeling lighter, calmer, and more confident after treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about getting started, how EMDR works, session structure, and fees — so you can move forward with confidence.
What can I expect in a first therapy session?
The first session is primarily a conversation. We'll discuss what brings you in, your personal history, and what you're hoping to work toward. There's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with — the goal is to begin building trust and understanding, and to start shaping a treatment plan that fits your needs.
How does EMDR therapy actually work?
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation — most commonly guided eye movements — to help your brain reprocess memories that are stored in a way that keeps triggering emotional distress. The process follows a structured eight-phase protocol and doesn't require you to describe every detail of a traumatic experience. Many clients describe it as feeling like a weight they've carried for years finally begins to lift.
How long are sessions and how often will we meet?
Individual sessions are typically 50-55 minutes. EMDR processing sessions may be scheduled for extended 80-90 minute slots to allow for full processing within a single session. Most clients begin with weekly sessions, with frequency adjusting over time as progress develops and goals evolve.
Do you accept insurance?
All Souls Counseling is a self-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly. Self-pay allows for greater privacy, more flexible treatment planning, and care that isn't constrained by insurance-approved diagnoses or session limits. A superbill can be provided upon request if you'd like to seek out-of-network reimbursement from your insurer.
How do I know which service is right for me?
You don't need to arrive with a clear answer. A free 15-minute consultation is the best way to talk through what you're experiencing and determine together which approach fits best. Many clients find that their work draws from more than one modality — EMDR alongside attachment-focused therapy, for example — and the plan is always adjusted to what serves you most.
Do you offer virtual therapy?
Yes. Secure telehealth sessions are available to clients throughout the entire state of Virginia. Virtual therapy is effective for trauma work, EMDR, and individual counseling, and is a fully supported option at Thrive Counseling.
